A Piece That Has What Others Dont.
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :1
Highly regarded as one of the finest pieces of business investigative journalism written, Connie Brucks groundbreaking work on the subject of junk bonds and corporate financing was written during a time when the business press universally admired Drexel Burnham for their ability to turn junk into gold.

You will find this book quite entertaining and comprehensible. A smooth read not filled with too much industry jargon, its nomenclature friendly enough even for the beginner. It highlights the bright sides as well as the dark sides of the critically acclaimed Junk-bond king Michael Milken and allows each of us to have his or her own view on Milken and Drexel Burnhams underlying philosophy.

Although the book does lean heavily towards Milken having a me first attitude, it does manage to pin down a few important business lessons underscored by him that cannot be overlooked. You will not waste any time reading this piece. You will definitely be on the winning side by reading this book.

This book will definitely generate scores of topics to discuss and debate about the philosophies of American business that dominated Wall Street in the 1980s. This future classic highlights many corporate raiders that are still vehemently visible today. Just to name a few: players like Carl Icahn, Nelson Peltz, Ron Perelman, T. Boone Pickens and a host of others.

A definite must read for those interested in banking, financial history, and especially for business students.

This is a very honest book about life and how ethnicity on WALL STREET matters!
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
The Savings & Loan scheme was a creation of Michael Milken and his firm Drexel Burnham. They realized they could sell high risk securities to S&Ls while assuring the S&Ls (correctly) that being FDIC insured they could not lose.

The ultimate cost to the taxpayers (which is to say the Middle Class) was some $150 billion.

Charlie Keating as noted in the "Predators Ball", when Keating tried, repeatedy, to contact Milken to be part of his group, Milkens secretary would just say: "You are not a Jew" and hang up on him.

This is a very honest book about life and how ethnicity on WALL STREET matters!

The story of junk bonds in the 1980s
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :1
Today the phrase "securities fraud" evokes Enron, WorldCom and Tyco. Two decades ago, it evoked Drexel Burnham Lambert, the investment bank that ruled the junk-bond realm and helped fund some of the most audacious corporate takeovers of the 1980s. Enthroned at the center of Drexel Burnham was the king of junk, Michael Milken. Was he a financial genius who found ever more clever ways to make markets more efficient? Or was he a swindler running the worlds biggest Ponzi scheme? New Yorker writer Connie Bruck sets out to answer those questions in this cautionary tale of Drexels rise and fall. getAbstract recommends this fascinating, highly detailed financial history. However, the flaw in Brucks narrative is the absence of a third act: She inexplicably ends the book before Milkens trial and sentencing. While its ending is weak, this provocative story makes one thing clear: Uneasy lies the head that wears a leveraged crown.

Rating Point :2 Helpful Point :5
Thau over complicates her points. The book is too difficult to understand. I am an attorney who has been investing in stocks and bonds for over 10 years. This book is not appropriate for any level investor.

A solid introduction
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :1
A great introduction to bonds and there place in a portfolio. The perfect place for the individual to start if they are considering purchasing individual bonds for their portfolio.

However, anyone looking for more in-depth information and strategies will likely be disappointed. Relatively little information about Zeros, TIPS and other products that are likely to be of interest. Start here, and then increase your knowledge with a title specific to your interests (i.e. municipal bonds, etc.).
Good Introduction
Rating Point :3 Helpful Point :1
A good introduction to understanding the bond market and how to invest in it. Clear, succinct and more readable than some more technical books on the subject. However, The Bond Book is a bit dated, the second and latest edition is from 2000, its in need of an update. Overall this is a good first choice as a primer if youre not too concerned about the latest developments in bond derivatives.
God book but too general

I ordered this book for my business library. I enjoyed the book, but if you want more specifics on the methods of detailed bond calculations, I would recommend a good financial investments text book.

Am nearly finished reading the 2nd printing of this excellent tutorial. Although I have been an avid buyer & seller of fixed income products for many years, the author did a superb job of furthering my mid-level expertise especially in the area of municipal bonds. Her plain language explanations were most welcome as opposed to the plethora of financial techno-babble tomes that share the bookshelf. 5 Stars without reservation.

Junk Bonds How High Yield Securities Restructured Corporate America
Binding: Hardcover
Rating: 3.0
Review: 2
Studio: Oxford University Press, USA
Junk bonds burst into the nation's headlines as the fastest growing and most controversial financial instruments of the 1980s. Branded with an unflattering nickname, these high yield securities were tarnished in the public eye by waves of negative publicity. Critics cast the financiers and entrepreneurs who pioneered their use as symbols of a decade of greed and financial excess. By the end of the 1980s, the heyday of junk bonds had seemingly come to a close with the conviction of junk bond pioneer Michael Milken and the bankruptcy of Drexel Burnham Lambert, the brokerage that dominated the high yield market. But the controversy surrounding junk bonds continues. Now, in Junk Bonds, business professor Glenn Yago turns the tables on conventional wisdom about this new financial technology. He offers the first systematic examination of the facts about high yield securities. His analysis provides hard evidence that demystifies junk bonds and explodes many of the popular myths that surround them. Junk Bonds sheds light on the role of high yield financing in what Yago calls the democratization of capital. Before the advent of junk bonds, only companies with an "investment grade" rating--five percent of the 23,000 American companies with sales over $35 million--had access to long term capital. In effect, the author argues, 95 percent of American companies were denied the means to finance growth and business development. Yago shows how junk bonds changed all that, breathing life into thousands of American companies that had been shunned by the capital markets. His research demonstrates that these "junk" companies outperformed many Fortune 500 firms in job creation, product development, sales, and business innovation. The real contribution of junk bonds, according to Yago, was to improve the productivity and competitiveness of American business by restructuring companies in the wake of the corporate conglomerations of the 1960s and 1970s. His findings show that divestitures by companies financed with high yield bonds were not necessarily destructive. Many sold-off units flourished as independent enterprises at a time when numerous "investment grade" companies stagnated or closed plants or fired workers. This restructuring of corporate America has enabled businesses to compete in a changing international environment, benefiting managers, workers, stockholders, and investors alike. Junk Bonds provides readers with a scholarly analysis that shears away the hype and hysteria that often accompany rapid change. And at a time when Wall Street is under greater scrutiny than at any time since the Depression, this provocative study provides a timely and thoughtful contribution to the debate surrounding junk bonds.

Board rooms are one of the last bastions of secrecy in todays increasingly transparent world. Talking with the board often causes people to talk in hushed tones and reverence. However, Charans book reminds us that Boards consist of people with responsibilities to discharge and tools to use. This book is a must read for every executive to remind them of the foundational elements that run the company: customers, cash flow, leverage, etc. Too often we lose sight of these things as we work day to day.

The book is written in a highly accessible style with just enough tools to help executives understand board dynamics, information and success factors. This makes it an ideal book to pick up for a long plane flight or a weekend to upgrade your knowledge and skills.

Sarbanes Oxley and board oversight concerns were the genesis for this book as boards move from what Charan calls Ceremonial to Progressive. However, Charan writes about practices for effective boards helping this book stand the test of time.

In a world where there are fads, changing strategies and constant pressure, executives need to take some time out to reinforce what matters and get back to basics. This is one of those books that everyone should pick up and read.

Helpful guidance for boards that want to be more than rubber stamps for their CEO
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :1
This book is targeted for those of you who sit on boards, might yet sit on boards, or have an interest in how boards can and should function in the post Sarbanes-Oxley world. After the high profile implosions of several major firms and the revelations of executive criminality, board negligence, and accounting failures, the relevant parties have put pressure on firms to do a better job of functioning in the best interests of the owners of the firm the shareholders. Among other steps, this included making the boards more independent of the CEO (who was too often also the Chair of the board) and the executive management of the firm.

Ram Charan explains how firms can evolve from being an old style Ceremonial Board to become a Liberated Board and then grow into an active and effective Progressive Board. He emphasizes that Progressive Boards have to emphasize the Group Dynamics of the board (how the team works together and how synergistically their talents combine), the Information Systems they use (relevant information they can get outside what is packaged for them by the CEO), and that the board focus on meaningful and relevant issues rather than getting distracted by the minutiae of board processes.

The author explains each of these three qualities in detail and deals with issues of CEO selection, management, and succession. He also talks about how the board should function when it has fully evolved. Charan also provides a few helpful questionnaires you can use to determine how your company is doing in certain key areas.

An interesting and helpful book for the target audience.

A spate of high-profile corporate meltdowns ended the days of high-flying CEOs who also ran their companies boards of directors. Instead, regulators, shareholders and the public now demand that corporate boards oversee CEOs and protect shareholder interests. Ram Charan lays out what your board can do to maximize its positive contributions and add value to the company. His writing is clear and to the point. This book is very helpful for board members who are trying to find their way in the post Sarbanes-Oxley world of corporate governance. Charan provides useful questionnaires to help you analyze the state of your company and its board on several crucial points. getAbstract recommends this book to board members, potential board members, and others who have an interest in modern boards and corporate governance.

Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :4
With all of the recent turmoil in US companies caused by some high profile CEOs and boad of directors not maintaining the highest level of accountability and integrity, I pulled this book back off of the shelf for a re-read.

Ram Charans advocacy of companies building a strong independent board, one that has more than rubber-stamp responsibilities is more timely now than when it was written. The author has worked with some of the best companies, boards and executives around...some have succeeded and others have failed. Yet, his insight is one that focuses on accountability and frequent, frank evaluations of both roles: the board director and the CEO.

I found the final chapters that focused on the Chairman/CEO evaluation to be insightful, detailed and organized to provide any director with the framework to ask the right questions.

I recommend this book now to all senior executives to read again, focusing on the evaluation process that your leader should be subject to. I recommend this book even more to those board directors that face a responsibility to shareholders and employees, that they will oversight the senior leaders and hold them accountable to building businesses with integrity...not just providing the right numbers on a scorecard.

George Clooneys performance drives this tense corporate thriller from Bourne trilogy screenwriter James Gilroy, who makes his directorial debut here. Clooney is the eponymous "hero," a burnt-out lawyer who cleans up legal messes created by the clients of a large law firm. When a crisis materializes in the form of the firms top shark (Tom Wilkinson) suffering an apparent meltdown while defending a shady chemical company from lawsuits, Clayton discovers not only a cover-up to deny payments to farmers injured by the companys products, but a chance to find some purpose in the face of his lifes downward. Clooney (who also co-produced the film) brings soul and quiet determination to his beleaguered character, and theres excellent support from Wilkinson, Sydney Pollack (also a co-producer), and Michael OKeefe Gilroys script also does a solid job of stacking the deck against Clayton as he attempts to ferret out the truth behind the cover-up. Unfortunately, the film settles for a pat conclusion that, while emotionally satisfying, feels forced and delivers an overly simplistic message (corporations can be bad morally questionable work can make one feel dirty). And Tilda Swinton is wasted in a thankless role as the chemical companys nerve-wracked and unsympathetic legal counsel. Still, Clooney fans will appreciate this fine addition to his growing roster of flawed heroes. -- Paul Gaita

And the more Michael tries to undo the damage, the more hes up against forces that put corporate survival over human life including Michaels. Worth it
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
I would have liked to watch this again. Saw it once. I enjoyed the performances, and the quiet but deadly build-up. As I recall, no car chases, which is a blessing in any movie. Tilda Swintons role as the unraveling robot is masterful. Clooney plays a corporate burnout well enough to be one. Some people call it predictable, but I did not find it so, because I viewed it more as a character study that a plot-driven story. The guy who plays Clooneys friend has a great turn at a monologue that shows how clever -- and sane -- he is, despite everyone believing hes nuts.
    Corporate/Suspense...Great Combo!
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
I was a bit skeptical about this movie when I first heard about it, but I finally got around to picking it up on Blu Ray. First off let me start by saying this movie is not for people who only want action, explosions, and shootouts. Ill start off with the BD details: The picture is excellent on this film, its smooth and the skin tones have a nice color and smooth texture, the outdoor scenes are very crisp...I was impressed with the picture. The sound is only 5.1 DD, this was a bit disappointing, but got the job done nonetheless. Clear highs, great voice depth, and deep lows when needed...I cant complain to much.

Now onto the movie...I will admit I sat down to watch this and figured it was gonna be slow, however its a good paced slow. I enjoyed the characters, and George Clooney did an excellent job. His position at a huge law firm requires him to be serious and quick on his toes...George does this perfectly and really convinced me.

I found myself enjoying the "thinking" throughout the entire movie, who did this, whats going on with that, it made for a very good experience! I wont give away any spoilers, since they are the best part of this movie. All in all id say this one is definitely worth checking out, you wont be disappointed.
A film with the right parts, but ends up being too staged
Rating Point :3 Helpful Point :0
The film does have a strong feel and Clooney gives a solid performance. I found Pollacks lawyer especially sharply drawn and convincing. In the end, the movie becomes another rehashing of The Insider. The screenwriter tried to create the typical conflicted sub-plot of the protagonists battle with his professional/moral obligations and his personal struggles, etc, however this was not highly nuanced. Of course their was the divorced dad angle too for more contrived emotional push. The one liners that are stirring in the trailers turn out be banal in the context of the plot, which turns into a simple-minded rampage of a corporation hell-bent on eliminating all whistle-blowers. As for the attorney who "sees the light", although strongly performed by Wilkinson, his self-revelation becomes cliched scene-by-scene.
    A top notch thriller

The only problem is it does not pick-up a lot of the words in the book. I havent had time to add words but will do this soon. My daughter and a friend of mine saw it Thanksgiving and will probably be ordering one soon. It was a little pricey but I still love it.

This is the best product ever! I dont have to worry about losing my shopping list anymore. Whenever I notice Im running low on something, I say the name of the item into my Smartshopper and it shows up on the display screen. It keeps it in memory until I am ready to shop. Then when Im ready to shop, I hit the print button and it prints the list out in "categories." Makes shopping at the grocery store quicker and easier. The voice recognition is fantastic. The Smartshopper has almost every item you would need from the grocery store in its memory. If you have an item that is not in the memory, it is easy to add it to the library. I love it!

I love this SmartShopper and dont want to be without it. Occasionally I have to look in the directory to get it right but it was easy to add the few things I couldnt find. My favorite thing is the way it organizes the list when it prints out. Makes my shopping so much easier and faster.
My only criticism is you cant turn it off so it goes through batteries. A rechargeable version would be nice.
a nice product that needs improvement
Rating Point :2 Helpful Point :1
I purchased this item for my wife in an attempt to simplify her life a bit. I am a gadget loving guy and thought this would be a great tool for her...a mistake on my part. The idea of this device is great, no need to write out a shopping list on some shard of paper, just press the button and say what you need. This is where the trouble began.
Many items are not loaded into the library (fettucini wasnt in there???), however you are able to add new items to the library at will via the library management option. Heres the problem, the cursor has a mind of its own when you are trying to add new items making the whole task of typing a word an exercise in futility. After spending two minutes typing in a 7 letter word you then need to add the voice recording for the item you just added. We did this several times and when we finished the Smartshopper was still unable to locate the items when we attempted to add them to the list.
Another gripe is that you cannot create more than one list, Im sure we are not the only people who shop at more than one store. The option to create more than one list would be a nice addition on future versions.

On the positive side the unit prints out your list quickly and its easily legible.

In summation, the concept behind this gadget is great...however there are still several bugs that need to be worked out. I also think that it is a bit overpriced for what it actually does. If this were thirty dollars it would be a great buy, for $100 my opinion is dont waste your time/money, a sheet of scrap paper works fine and is much less frustrating to use. (we returned this item).

Oregon Scientific RM313PNA Self-Setting Projection Alarm Clock with Indoor Thermometer, Blue

    Product Description

Automatically Sets to US Atomic Clock / Projects onto wall, ceiling / Indoor Thermometer / LCD Screen / Alarm with Snooze Function Icon display of U.S. map with designated time zones AC adapter included for continuous projection Calendar Mode Uses 2 AA batteries for backup power (included) Oregon Scientific 90-day limited warranty

    Amazon.com Review

Housed in high-tech blue plastic, this alarm clock is far more sophisticated than its cute appearance may lead one to believe. Whether you check on the time by consulting the clocks LCD screen or by looking at a large red-light projection of the time beamed onto a wall or ceiling, youll know its accurate. Thats because the clock is equipped with a radio receiver tuned to the U.S. Atomic Clock, and keeps time with split-second accuracy by automatically adjusting, if necessary, to the Atomic Clocks signals six times every 24 hours. From those signals, the 5-1/4-by-4-1/2-inch clock (2-1/2 inches thick) not only shows the precise time, but also displays the date and day, with automatic adjustment for daylight-saving time and leap year, according to the North American time zone for which the clock is set. (The day can be shown in English, Spanish, or French.)

The red-light projection makes it possible to check the time without squinting. If the clock is in battery mode (two AA batteries required but not included), pressing the clocks snooze bar will beam the time onto the ceiling for five seconds--and also backlight the LCD screen. If the clock is plugged into a wall socket with an AC adapter (included), the projection and backlighting will be available either for five seconds with the snooze bar or continuously if a continuous-beam control is set. As a backup, you can set the time, day, and date manually as well as automatically. --Fred Brack

My son loves this clock, because he can see what time it is on his wall.
    Love this clock
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
This is my second Oregon Scientific projection clock. I love how it resets itself with the time changes, the simplicity of the alarm feature, the small space it takes at the bedside, and the incredibly clear projection on the ceiling. Small enough to carry with me when I travel - YEAH!
    not the best projection clock
Rating Point :3 Helpful Point :0
The projection works well in the dark and at night. However, with any amount of light, you can not see the projection rendering it useless.
    Alarm a little unreliable
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
It works, but for whatever reason Im not entirely satisfied. If you want the time on your ceiling this is the product for you.

The cost of capital concept has myriad applications in business decision-making. The standard methodology for deriving cost of capital estimates is based on the seminal Modigliani-Miller analyses. This book generalizes this framework to include non-debt tax shields (e.g., depreciation), interactions between the borrowing rate and tax shields, and default considerations. It develops several new results and shows how better cost of capital and marginal tax rate estimates can be generated. The book's unified cost of capital theory is discussed with comprehensive numerical examples and graphical illustrations. This book will be of interest to corporate managers, academics, investment bankers, governmental agencies, and private companies that generate cost of capital estimates for public consumption.
